A old english moview about betrayal of a friend to another friend.?

Well, the story goes like this, two friends put a bet that one of them
has to live in slum for a month. Friend names power of attorney of
this business and property to another friend and lives in a slum.
There he fell in love for a poor girl. As time ends, and the friend
complete his bet returns to the friend to whom he has given power of
attorney , but the other friend betrays him and state people that the
one who has lived in slum area has gone insane (that is why he has
lived in a slum). Now, the girl promises the friend that she will get
his property for him. (Well i have seen this movie during the year
1997 to 2000.)

So anyone who knew or seen the movie, kindly give me its name?
